What is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma in Sanskrit means Five remedies used to clean the body of toxic materials or Five activities that cleans your body.

Types of Panchakarma Treatment

1. Vamana
2. Nasya
3. Virechana

1. Vamana

As the name suggests, the Vamana is a vomiting process.

Snehana procedures popularly known as Oleation Therapy is followed as a pre-therapeutic practice. The Oleation Therapy can be both internal and external.

In internal oleation, a specific amount of medicated ghee is given to individuals for a specific period of time depending upon his body constitution orally. The quantity of the ghee is generally gradually increased on a periodic basis. Generally, Internal oleation is practiced for a week time.

In external oleation, ayurvedic body massage is prescribed. Such body massage generally last for an hour time but depending upon the body requirement and necessity of the treatment it may vary from 30 minutes to 90 minutes. Generally, after each body massage ayurvedic herbal steam bath is followed.

In Vaman therapy apart from the oleation therapy, generally fomentation therapy is also practiced.

Generally, in fomentation therapy, fomentation with hot water is practiced. A clean cotton piece is used to give hot fomentation to all over the body. For hot fomentation over a specific part of the body generally sponge, water bottle or rubber bags are used to give hot fomentation.

After undergoing oleation and fomentation therapy for prescribed days, toxins in the body gets liquified and accumulates in our stomach. The emetic herbal medicines are then given to induce vomiting which clears toxins from the body.

2. Nasya

Nasya

In this form of panchakarma treatment also fomentation procedures are applied to the head and shoulder areas of the individual.

The Nasya treatment clears the clogged impurities from the head region and ‘Kapha’ toxins from the body.

After clearing the clogged pores, herbal nasal drops are dispensed into the nostrils to smoothen and treat a migraine, hair loss problems.

3. Virechana

Virechana

In panchakarma treatment, Virchana is a most important and often used procedure.

In Virechana cleansing procedures of the bowel is undertaken. Before going into the process of Virechana, pre-therapeutic procedures like oliniation and fomentations are also followed.

Generally, external edema is administered along with medicated herbal solutions through the anus to stimulate evacuation and cleansing of the bowel.

4. Raktamoskshana

Raktamoskshana

The literal meaning of Raktamoskshana is blood cleaning. This procedure is usually practiced to treat the disease caused by impure blood.

Skin diseases such as Psoriasis, Eczema etc are treated with Raktamoskshana procedures.

Raktamoskshana should be done by the expert professionals only by following proper precautionary methods as it may cause the spread of the infection in other parts of the body as well as may contaminate the person who is treating the disease.

5. Basti

Basti

It is somewhat an extended process of Virechana. In Basti panchakarma treatment medicated substances such as medicated oil, ghee, milk etc is inserted into the rectum to cleanse it.

It is used in the healing treatment of disease like piles and fistula.

Basti works well for the treatment of all the three doshas and in an ayurvedic fraternity, it is popularly known as the mother of all panchakarma treatment.

Precautionary Measure in Panchakarma Treatment

There are certain DOs and DON’Ts in the panchakarma treatment which one should bear in mind before going into the procedure.

Panchakarma treatments should never be followed if you are suffering from any form of fever or you are pregnant.

Panchakarma Treatment can be undertaken or not should be determined by an expert in the field after going through a proper evaluation of the constitution of the body.
